I’m a Scottish-Australian artist and teacher with a research-based practice that explores photo-based media, performance, creative writing, and sculpture to examine how marginalisation shapes personal narratives and lived experiences. My work is driven by themes of memory, place, and time, often represented through obscured images and foggy landscapes from Scotland, which I refer to as “queered perspectives.” These perspectives emerge from an experimental photographic approach that creates blurred, distorted images.
Portraiture also plays a central role in my work, particularly in relation to sexuality and gender. I have a deep interest in the cultural narratives surrounding "the tomboy" and, through my research, discovered a significant erasure of tomboy characters in literature beyond childhood. In response, I created a series of projects examining the tomboy experience from childhood to adulthood, aiming to highlight and bring this aspect of female experience into focus.
My own journey as a tomboy formed the basis of my PhD project, Evoking the Invisible Lesbian (2019-2023). What began as a self-discovery process evolved into a celebration of the power of invisibility, revealing narrative potential within gaps and absences. Through art projects, I explored the intersections of identity, particularly my experience as a lesbian in working-class Edinburgh during the 1980s and 1990s. This led to a critical investigation of lesbian invisibility, initiated by my visit to the Lesbian Archive in Glasgow in 2019. There, I discovered a profound absence of visual representations of tomboys and lesbians from that time, inspiring me to revisit my past and explore notions of invisibility and the psychological space of “the gay closet” through experimental photography and images of fog. These works reflect a sense of personal absence within the social landscape of the era.
My work has been exhibited in Australia, Germany, Iceland, China, and the UK. I won the Melt Prize for Portraiture in 2017 and the Midsummer Australia Post Award in 2018, and I have been shortlisted for various awards, including the Head On Portrait Prize. I’ve also received commissions and funding from the Victoria Arts Council to conduct research in Iceland and Scotland. Combining theoretical analysis with studio-based methodologies, my interdisciplinary approach engages with social and political discourses through intersectional methodologies, using archives to provoke reflection and dialogue. By investigating the historical context of specific places, I aim to uncover layers of meaning that deepen our understanding of ourselves and the societies we inhabit.

This was a collaborative project with participants who self-identified as tomboys. Ages spanned from 14 to 75 years old. Findings and artwork culminated in an installation of works in various public places, such as alongside a self-published book and dissertation.

Research of working-class Scottish lesbian ephemera circa 1980-1990. Research findings culminated in a public installation and presentation of large-scale printed material titled The Broadsheet Project (2021). I am currently making steps to bring The Broadsheet Project to Glasgow in conjunction with the Glasgow Women’s Library in 2025 – pending.
Artist-In-Residence hosted by Siteworks, Melbourne, in conjunction with ‘Making Space Program’ funded by Merri-bek City Council. (2020)
