Evoking The Invisible Lesbian Through Creative Practice (2019-2023)

The Invisible Lesbian is an installation of art works that were the culmination of my PhD research. The project investigates how marginalisation has shaped a personal narrative and a lived life. I deployed photo-based praxis, performance, creative writing, and sculpture to examine the complexities of my journey from being a “teenage tomboy” to an adult lesbian in working class Edinburgh during the 1980s and 1990s. It explores personal and historical intersections through the articulation of a shifting identity towards awareness of gender identity and sexuality. Informed by my lived experiences and autoethnographic methodologies, my research was underpinned by feminist, lesbian and queer creative practices (as well as others) and theories including Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology. The research seeks to contribute to the visibility of lesbian and queer lived experiences in contemporary art practice.\

Evoking the Invisible Lesbian was exhibited at Site Eight Gallery, RMIT University School of Art, Melbourne in June 2023.
